Medgar Evers (1925-1963)

Issued February 21

The 2009 Black Heritage stamp celebrates Anna Julia Cooper, a civil rights pioneer and a pioneer in the teaching of African Americans. The first day of issue ceremony will be Thursday, June 11, 2009, at 10 am at the Dunbar High School, 1301 New Jersey Ave NW, Washington, DC 20001."
Issued April 9, 2009

The third design in the Kwanzaa series of stamps was created by Stamp Artist Lloyd McNeill. The bold colors in the stamp art are complemented in the top right corner by the colors of the Kwanzaa flag — green for growth, red for blood, and black for the African people — which are the same colors as the Pan-African flag. The field of green around the borders symbolizes growth and a bountiful harvest. In the hoop that the girl holds in her hands, as well as in the family grouping of mother, father, and child, McNeill symbolized unity. No date has yet been set for issue of the stamp.
