Ernest J. Gaines Memorial Cover

Acclaimed novelist Ernest James Gaines (January 15, 1933 - November 5, 2019) wrote about the struggles of African Americans in rural Louisiana, where he was born the son of sharecroppers on a small plantation in Pointe Coupee Parish, near Baton Rouge. His noted works include The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman
(1971), A Gathering of Old Men 1983), and A Lesson Before Dying which won the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1993.
